MARCA. -¿Está harto de que todo el mundo le pregunte por Armstrong, de lo que dice o deja de decir?
No, lo entiendo perfectamente y sé que es algo que despierta un gran interés entre la gente. Lo llevo con normalidad, porque es la mejor manera de no gastar energía pensando en ello.


-Y cuando Lance dice, y no precisamente como una alabanza, que Contador sigue viviendo en el mismo pueblo de siempre, en los suburbios de Madrid, que sigue teniendo los mismos amigos, la familia siempre a su lado... ¿Qué piensa usted?
Que somos muy diferentes. Yo, al contrario que él, estoy súper orgulloso de tener la familia a mi lado, los mismos amigos de siempre, seguir viviendo en mi pueblo y no haber cambiado mi forma de ser. Con esas declaraciones me alaba.


-También dice que usted se está rodeando de gente que sólo saber decir "sí". Él, sin embargo, tiene a Johan Bruyneel al lado y éste le dice muchas veces: "no, Lance, estás equivocado".
Es su percepción. Si me rodeara de gente así, que sólo sabe decir "sí", igual viviría en otro sitio y habría cambiado de amistades y ese tipo de cosas.


-Recientemente, Bruyneel decía en MARCA que si usted está al nivel de 2009 no sabría cómo ganarle.
Son cosas que se dicen, pero todos sabemos que hay muchísimas circunstancias de carrera que influyen. Además, también los rivales se preparan y mejoran. Me alegra que lo diga, pero no estoy demasiado de acuerdo con eso.


-El hecho de que Bruyneel le conozca muy bien, puesto que han trabajado tres años juntos, ¿le da ventaja? ¿O se compensa porque también usted le conoce, o les conoce, muy bien?
Yo creo que se compensa. E incluso diría que tengo un poco de ventaja porque yo, por suerte, no he tenido demasiados días malos, mientras que conozco perfectamente cómo han o hemos aprovechado los momentos de debilidad de otros corredores y equipos y cómo hemos intentado ponerles en apuros. En el cómputo global, probablemente, salgo ganando. Me siento un privilegiado porque he podido aprender mucho en los tres años que he estado con Johan.


-Su ya ex director decía también en estas páginas que es absurdo pensar que desde dentro del equipo se favorecía a uno más que a otros, que lo que había era para todos igual.
Hubo momentos delicados durante la temporada, en especial durante el Tour, cuando en algunas etapas a mí me hubiera interesado otro ritmo para sacar más diferencias. Pero al final el resultado fue bueno y me quedo con eso.


-¿Y, como líder del equipo, no tuvo la oportunidad de decir: "ésta no es la táctica que más me interesa"?
No, el director era Johan Bruyneel y él tomaba las decisiones. Él planteaba la táctica y yo me adaptaba lo máximo posible a ella.


-¿Armstrong y Contador tuvieron el mismo material a su disposición?
Sí, en líneas generales sí, aunque con el matiz de las ruedas, un tema al que tampoco quiero dar más vueltas. Johan sabe cómo fue y creo que no hace falta dar más explicaciones.


-Pues él dice que Trek les daba las mismas ruedas.
Johan sabe la verdad.


-Alguna otra vez usted ha dicho públicamente que tuvo que comprarse las ruedas...
Sí. Había un par de ruedas de una marca determinada que eran más evolucionadas y ligeras que el resto. Yo creo que tenía que estar en igualdad y decidí comprar un juego. Tampoco hay que darle más vueltas al tema, pero lo que es así, es así, no hay más.


-Ese tipo de cosas se supone que no le va suceder este año.
Se supone que no, porque todos los patrocinadores se están portando excelentemente conmigo. Pero no sólo ahora, sino siempre, de hecho estoy muy agradecido no sólo a la marca de bicicletas anterior (Trek), sino hasta al más pequeño de los colaboradores que he tenido.


-Dice que se encuentra mejor que hace un año. ¿No será la consecuencia de que ahora no tiene que preocuparse de quién es el líder en el equipo?
El año pasado también intenté no gastar energía en esas cosas, tanto en carrera como fuera de ella, pero es verdad que este año tengo un ambiente más relajado.


-Ahora mismo no tienen la mejor relación posible, pero ¿no sería posible que usted y Armstrong se llevaran bien?
Por mi parte, sí, porque soy una persona que no quiere conflictos con nadie y no tengo ningún problema en tener una relación de respeto mutuo.


- Respeto mutuo... ¿Tiene la sensación de que una y otra vez es él quien ataca?
Eso es la gente la que lo tiene que decir. Yo lo que quiero es llegar al Tour al 100% y sin haber gastado energías por unas declaraciones más altas que otras.


-¿Qué pasará, cómo reaccionará, cuando se vea con él? ¿Se darán la mano, se ignorarán?
Le saludaré con respeto, como siempre, y nada más.


-Centrémonos en su actual equipo. ¿Estará a la altura en el Tour? ¿Podrán luchar sin problemas contra el RadioShack, Saxo Bank y Liquigas?
Cada vez estoy más convencido de que voy a tener un equipo competitivo durante el Tour. No tenemos los nombres de otros, pero también tenemos buenos corredores. Todos están respondiendo de una manera increíble y los kazajos, que han crecido deportivamente mucho y mejorado su nivel, se están involucrando mucho más que, por ejemplo, el año pasado.


-Pese a los éxitos consechados en 2009, sigue por lo que se ve intentando mejorar contrarreloj.
Sí, porque este año tengo un material diferente, una bicicleta nueva (Specialized), y tengo que perfeccionarla y ajustarla a mis condiciones y a mis medidas. Estamos trabajando muy duro en eso y creo que al final vamos a conseguir una buena máquina. Está siendo un cambio muy grande, porque no es fácil cambiar de una marca, con la que llevaba varios años, a otra, pero las primeras impresiones son muy buenas.


-¿Tanto puede cambiar una bicicleta cuando se respetan los ángulos y las medidas?
Sí, porque el comportamiento y la aerodinámica son diferentes. La nueva está bastante lograda, pero aún queremos mejorarla más.


-¿Eso significa que se ve margen de progresión?
Sí, creo que sí. Tengo 27 años recién cumplidos y creo que puedo mejorar todavía, tanto contrarreloj como en montaña. De hecho, estoy entrenándome con muchas ganas para ello y los datos, por el momento, están siendo mejores que los anteriores.


-¿Los datos de enero de 2010 son mejores que los de enero de 2009?
Sí.


-Así que no sólo Armstrong mejora...
Yo no sé los suyos, pero sí puedo asegurar que los míos son mejores que los del año pasado. Y no porque me haya entrenado más, porque incluso igual he llegado aquí más justo porque no competía desde el Tour, cuando en 2008 aguanté hasta el Mundial.


-¿Cuál será su calendario, su camino de aproximación al Tour?
Debutaré en la Vuelta al Algarve, luego disputaré París-Niza, Volta a Catalunya (donde coincidirá previsiblemente con Armstrong) y País Vasco. Depende cómo me encuentre de cansado, quizá corra las clásicas para conocerlas y cogerles el encanto; luego, en mayo, estaré unos días de vacaciones antes de empezar a preparar el Tour, y en junio disputaré el Dauphiné Libéré. Es un calendario muy similar al del año pasado porque algo que funciona es mejor no cambiar.


-¿Entra la Vuelta a España en su programa?
No está descartada, es una opción, pero todo dependerá de cómo vaya la temporada y cómo responda el equipo. El recorrido de este año es muy atractivo y no puedo descartarla de antemano.


-¿Cambiará de objetivos en el futuro?
Hay carreras que, como el Tour de California o de nuevo el Giro de Italia, me gustaría disputar. Pero este año no.
